Matthew Shlomowitz is a composer of concert music and performance pieces. He has three ongoing projects: Popular Contexts, a series combining recordings of recognisable real world sound with instrumental music; Letter Pieces, which combine physical actions, music and text; and Lectures about Music, a series of lecture-pieces addressing ideas such as aesthetic judgement and emotional responses to music. He is Associate Professor in Composition at University of Southampton.

A founding member of Plus-Minus, Vicky Wright is also a member of the Danish ensemble Scenatet and has worked with the groups Lontano, Expose, Apartment House, Chroma and the Ruysdael Quartet. As a soloist she has performed at the Wigmore Hall, London; the Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York and was one of the ‘flying soloists’ in Birmingham Opera’s award winning production of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where she was awarded numerous prizes and at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Real Telepaths

Real Telepaths is a 45 minute performance created and performed with members of Plus Minus Ensemble, Neil Luck, and a group of other musicians. The work is an act of visioning; a central performer, incased in a sound-proof foam cube attempts desperately to bring into alignment a diverse array of voices, instruments, radio signals and images. Questions of communication, personal relations, communal experiences, and imagined futures collate in a telepathic squall, finally (almost) coming into focus as a live accompanied cinematic image.

Mira Benjamin is a Canadian violinist, researcher and new-music instigator. She performs new and old music with an experimental outlook, and is interested in how the human body holds and experiences knowledge. After growing up in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mira spent 10 years in Montréal, where she was a member of the Bozzini Quartet. Since 2014 she has resided in the UK, where she performs regularly as a violinist with Apartment House and Plus Minus Ensemble, and is Lecturer in Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Tom Pauwels (Bornem, Belgium, 1974). Since 2002 he has worked as the guitarist and co-artistic leader for the new music ensemble ICTUS (Brussels). Project-wise, he performs with the Anglo-Belgian octet Plus-Minus. Within the frame of the School of Arts in Gent he has developed an advanced master program with emphasis on contemporary chamber music in collaboration with the Spectra ensemble and Ictus. Since 2010 he has taught guitar at the International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt. His broad interest in performance has led to collaborations with choreographers as Xavier Le Roy, Maud Le Pladec and Andros Zins-Browne.

Paris based Slovenian guitarist, improviser, and composer Primož Sukič was born in Koper, Slovenia in 1986. He studied at the Academy of music in Ljubljana, at the Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt, and at the HoGent conservatory Ghent. Along with percussionist Ruben Orio he is a founding member of the Third Guy duo, where the two musicians constantly collaborate with other artists, and explore boundaries between improvisation, and composition as well as music and other artistic media. He is also a founding member of the group Replicant (Paris) which includes guitar, saxophone, and electronics. Their music blends contemporary written scores, improvisatory practices and rock.

We’ll find out when we get there is a major new inter-disciplinary work exploring sound, space and human perception. Franzson’s time stretching work slows down the body and mind to draw one into the grain of sound. Lim’s duo is titled after the Viking rune symbolising fertility and imagines a ritualistic creation of sound itself. Crane sustains the most elemental of musical objects to create a feeling of timelessness and space. Lang’s Game series creates a dynamic and reactive environment for the performers who negotiate an overlapping stack of interacting loops. Shiori Usui has created a new piece for Deep Time exploring the layering of instrumental and electronic sound.

Composition PhD students, July 2020

The original plan was a workshop and performances for trio of violin, clarinet and piano. We had met all three composers in November 2019 workshopping their ideas for these pieces, which helped greatly. After ’lock-down’, each composer had an individual online session with each musician to discuss aspects of their piece. A plan was then made as to the best way to record the pieces, be it with click track, overlaying tracks or improvising with given material.

The original project was for six Masters Composition students writing for a six piece ensemble. Discussing with the Guildhall we decided the numbers provided a perfect opportunity for each composer to work more intensively with one musician and create a solo piece. Composers were allocated a performer by the highly technical drawing of names from a hat and each composer had numerous consultations through video link to learn about the instrument in more detail and get feedback as the piece developed. Some also used electronics, mixed the musicians recordings with other material and others really explored the limits of just the instrument. As musicians we found this a rewarding and inspiring way to work.

Experimental conference call

A planned collaborative composition day with composer David Helbich was converted to an online experience based around the now ubiquitous video conference call. Plus-Minus created three videos to which students were invited to respond; the resulting short films were then used as building blocks for new compositions via a specially built website here.

David Lovatt competition

The brief for this year’s David Lovatt composition competition was to write a work for piano and electronics. After an in-person seminar in early March, just before lock-down, four composers were selected to take part. Mark Knoop worked with each student over several online sessions to record their pieces, and we then held a virtual concert to watch the finished videos together.

The Cold Trip is part of Bernhard Lang’s ongoing Monadologies cycle, which presents ‘meta-compositions’ based on well-known scores from music history. Part 2, for voice, piano and laptop, deals with the second half of Winterreise, creating palimpsests of Schubert’s original textures. Marko Ciciliani’s Black Horizon was inspired by trips the composer made to the western deserts of the USA. Ciciliani treats the electric guitars as resonant spaces, subdividing the strings to transform each one into a virtual instrument with its own acoustic properties.

Ensemble Plus-Minus presents a concert of two genre-stretching pieces especially written for the group. Matthew Shlomowitz’s Lecture About Bad Music (2015), drawing on scholarship from a range of fields and employing musical demonstrations and recreations of psychological experiments, asks us to consider if a piece of music can be inherently bad, or whether such judgements are purely subjective. Alexander Schubert’s Sensate Focus (2014) on the other hand, is concerned with the interplay between sound and image, and adds light as a fifth performer to a quartet of musicians. Using strobing effects, Schubert explores issues of sampling and sensorial experience in both the audio and visual domains, and our ability to form continuities from discrete objects.

A concert exploring the possibilities created from interaction between live performance and digital technology. Steen-Andersen’s work turns a sonic microscope on the voice, amplifying and recontextualising phonemes into musical phrases while Ablinger transcribes the microvariations of a blank vinyl record for solo piano. Prins pits the live performer against a virtual avatar, blending the acoustic and digital together in a new reality. In Rodgers’ piece, a handson exploration of the sonic possibilities of percussion is captured and transformed by live sampling, the electronic processing enhancing and augmenting the live performance.

The Bandrom project combines many elements in creating a multi-disciplinary performance event with a polyphony of independent concerts, slide-shows, installations and music situations. The event may be on one night or over several days, and in each version there is a new set-up that relates to the place and context.

Borrowing from folk traditions and the notion of an a oral-tradition, one of the main themes is to explore the idea of imperfect reproduction. The audience is invited to hear musicians teaching each other compositions by ear.
